National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS)
In 1996, the FDA the Centers for disease Control (CDC), and the US Department of Agriculture
(USDA) established the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS).
NARMS was established to prospectively monitor changes in antimicrobial susceptibilities
of zoonotic enteric pathogens from human and animal clinical specimens, from healthy farm animals,
and from carcasses of food-producing animals at slaughter. NARMS is monitoring susceptibilities
of non-typhoid Salmonella spp. and E. coli isolates to 17 antimicrobics using Sensititre
plates custom designed for the study.
